5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide
Based on the sermon "Staying Under the Covering of God" by Joel Duprée
Day 1: The Promise of God's Covering
Reading: Psalm 91
Devotional: God's covering is not a reward for perfect behavior -- it is a promise extended to those who dwell close to Him. Psalm 91 describes a shelter that never collapses, a refuge that never fails. The storms of life are not a sign that God has abandoned you. They are the very moments His covering proves most real. Just as a person standing beneath an umbrella stays dry while rain falls all around, those who abide in God's presence are protected in ways they may not even recognize until later. Draw close today. Stay under the umbrella.
Reflection: In what area of your life have you been standing just outside of God's covering, getting soaked, when He is right there inviting you back in?
Practical Application: Begin your morning by intentionally placing yourself under God's covering through prayer. Ask Him to guide your steps, guard your mind, and protect those you love throughout the day.
Day 2: When You Pass Through the Waters
Reading: Isaiah 43:1-3, which promises God's presence through deep waters, raging rivers, and consuming fire -- not around them, but through them.
Devotional: God does not promise a life without storms. He promises to be present in every storm you face. The word "when" in Isaiah 43 is not accidental. God is honest about the reality of hardship. He does not sell you a false version of the Christian life. What He does promise is that the waters will not sweep you away, the fire will not consume you, and you will not face any of it alone. Obedience sometimes means walking into a prayer meeting on an hour of sleep, exhausted and reluctant -- and finding God waiting there with exactly what you needed.
Reflection: Think of a moment when you showed up for God despite not wanting to. What did He give you in that moment that you would have missed if you had stayed home?
Practical Application: Identify one commitment to God this week that you have been tempted to avoid. Show up for it anyway. Trust that He has something prepared for you there.
Day 3: Letting God Carry the Heavy Load
Reading: Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him, promising rest and a load that is light compared to what we carry on our own.
Devotional: There are things God asks us to carry -- faith, prayer, worship, love, hope. And there are things He never designed us to carry at all -- crippling anxiety, unrelenting fear, the weight of controlling outcomes that are beyond our reach. When we try to carry both, we become exhausted and ineffective. God is not asking you to figure out tomorrow. He is asking you to trust Him with it. He proved His willingness to do the heavy lifting when Jesus bore the cross on our behalf. That sacrifice was the ultimate act of God saying, "Put it down. I have it."
Reflection: What burden are you carrying right now that God never asked you to pick up? What would it feel like to genuinely release it to Him today?
Practical Application: Write down the specific worry or burden that is weighing on you most heavily. Then write a short prayer surrendering it to God. Return to that prayer every time the weight tries to come back.
Day 4: The God Who Goes Ahead of You
Reading: Psalm 121:5-8, which describes God as the one who watches over your coming and going, shielding you from harm both now and forevermore.
Devotional: Before your child walks into that classroom, God is already there. Before you receive a difficult phone call, God is already in that moment. Before you enter the hardest season of your life, God has already gone ahead and made camp. He is not scrambling to catch up with your circumstances. He is already present in every room, every conversation, every situation you have not yet encountered. This is not a passive God who watches from a distance. This is a God who is actively involved in the details of your life, covering what you cannot see and protecting what you cannot control.
Reflection: Is there a situation involving someone you love -- a child, a spouse, a friend -- that feels completely out of your control? How does it change your perspective to know that God is already present in that situation?
Practical Application: Pray specifically over the places your loved ones will go this week. Name the schools, workplaces, and situations. Ask God to go before them into each one and establish His covering there.
Day 5: Drawing Close to Stay Close
Reading: James 4:8, which states that when we draw near to God, He draws near to us.
Devotional: The covering of God does not move. We do. When life feels relentless and peace feels distant, the first question to ask is not "Where is God?" but "Where am I standing in relation to Him?" Drawing close to God looks like talking to Him in the morning before the noise of the day takes over. It looks like opening His Word when you would rather scroll through your phone. It looks like flushing out the buildup of worry and negativity with a steady, generous flow of His presence. You cannot be under the covering of God without staying connected to the God of the covering.
Reflection: What habits or distractions have been pulling you away from consistent time with God? What is one specific change you can make this week to draw closer to Him?
Practical Application: Set a specific time each day this week for prayer and Scripture reading. Treat it as a non-negotiable appointment. Begin each session by simply saying, "God, I am drawing close to you today. Draw close to me."
